There's something on the Ocean floor, some kind of monster, that's
killing the divers at a certain beach via nuclear radiation.
Oceanopgrapher Doctor Stevens (Kent Taylor) and federal investigator Grant
(Rodney Bell) investigate independently, and both their trails lead to
oceanographer Professor King (Michael Whalen) ... whose daughter Lois
(Cathy Downs) falls for Stevens, the hero of the piece, in no time, so
King as her father can't all be bad, right? Ok, so enter King's
assistant Thomas (Phillip Pine), who has thrown in with some foreign
agents led by lovely blonde Wanda (Helene Stanton), and King's frustrated
secretary Ethel (Vivi Janiss), who wants to have her revenge on him for
some reason or another, to add a bit of confusion to the plot ... but
eventually, Ethel is killed by Thomas and he and Wanda are captured by the
police. Then a battleship is blown up, and now Professor King, who has
developed some kind of death ray that also involves some kind of monster
obviuosly, sees the error of his ways, and he is allowed to die a hero's
death when he blows his death ray and the monster up with himself ... Cheap
1950's sci-fi shocker, certainly no classic of the genre, but at the same
time not without its charm: Incredibly talky like many low budget flicks,
almost all of the action (and talkative non-action) takes place on the
beach for cost-cutting reasons, the monster outfit and the
transformation scenes are less than convincing, the exploding battleship
is obviously stock footage, the directorial effort is decidedly less than
inventive, the cast is uniformly wooden, and the finale is as predictable
as it is unexciting. Add to that a ridiculous story with a questionable
scientific background, and you are left with very little ... and yet, somehow the film is good fun (in a trashy
kind of way) to watch.
