When a flying object hits the earth, all the tv-receivers in the area go blind, some freak murders
happen & a gas tank explodes. Soon, some government officials find
out a man in spacesuit is behind all this, & they succeed in
cornering him at an oil plant - but in the end only catch his suit, he -
unbeknowest to them invisible - manages to escape. Still, the outer
space guy is in need of his suit & helmet, without them he is unable
to breath for too long, so he has to break into the government
laboratory. The government officials, by now convinced he means them no
harm, now set up a trap to get hold of him to enable contact, but all
their noble intentions are spoiled by the flashlight of a reporter,
& in the end the alien, through no fault of his own, is chased to
his death anyways.
It may sound like just another of these loveable 50's drive-in-sci-fi
flicks, but this one actually differs from the usual fare inasmuch as
that it's told in a matter-of-fact documentary style - which does not
necessarily make it great but at least interesting &
different. Also, the portrayal of the phantom as not an evil but an
misunderstood creature is rather unusual for its time.
Director W.Lee Wilder was actually Billy Wilder's less successful
younger brother.
