Reed (Christopher Abbott), a perfectly ordinary father and husband,
claims he's going on a businesstrip - but actually he just wants to murder
a prostitute, an idea given to him by the voices in his head, and
something he, who has never even hurt a fly, has planned to the last
detail. But when he finally has prostitute Jackie (Mia Wasikowska) over at
his place, he has to find out that the best laid plans are those the most
likely to fail. Not only has he problems to really kick off the action -
it's also that before he can do anything, he catches her self-harming her
leg with an icepick ... and since that doesn't factor into his plans at
all, he does the decent thing and gets her to a hospital. Apparently moved
by the gesture, Jackie invites Reed over to her place, where he tries to
get things back on track regarding his plans. Thing is, she had very
similar plans with him, and is already a few steps ahead ... Piercing
is a film that's well-acted, well-directed, and steeped in genre
references fans are sure to enjoy that are not in the way of the story
though ... it's just that the whole thing is a little bit too in your face
- as the writings of Ryu Murakami, who wrote the source novel, tend to be.
Basically, the thing's heavy on provocation but a bit lacking in subtlety
let alone irony that the whole situation clearly suggests. That said
though, the film's still a good mindfuck, it just fails to live up to its
full potential.
