After
being fired from the circus for playing a prank on his bully clown
partner (Dave Dedera), juggler Popovich (Gregory Popovich) decides
to move to Hollywood to try his luck - but he's thrown out of the
bus only halfway there for not having a ticket. Finally making it
to the next town on foot, he soon draws the ire of two security
guards (Joe Berry, Kyle Vonn Elzey), destroys a statue of local
millionairess Mrs Meglopolos (Robin Barcus Slonina), and
ultimately lands in court where the judge (Nathan Tannenbaum)
sentences him to work off his debt. But Popovich isn't cut out for
manual labour, so his day at a restaurant ends in a pie fight, his
day at a construction site sees a pallet of bricks swinging
through the warehouse, almost hitting and killing people, and when he
finally makes it onto a movie set, he destroys pretty much the whole set.
Through all of this, he's helped by only two friends, a dog that he has
saved from the dog catcher (Voki Kalfayan), and a waitress (Shannan
Calcutt) who sees his good heart others seem to routinely overlook. But
will this be enough to keep him out of trouble when Mrs Meglopolos has
sent her right hand man (Jimmy
Slonina) after Popovich to make life miserable for him?
Popovich: Road to Hollywood is a film that feels like
fallen out of time, as it presents its audience with a style of slapstick
clearly reminiscent of the silent era - think Charlie Chaplin or Buster
Keaton here -, with Gregory Popovich going to great length to get his
routines quite right the old-fashioned way, which is helped by a simple
yet endearing story, and a pleasant refusal of post-modernist
re-interpretation or irony. So in all, it's nostalgic fun, but also shows
that yesteryear's slapstick still works today if done right.
