Tomata Du Plenty is the last man on earth, or at least in the USA,
after a terrible nuclear war. Him being all alone in a bombshelter, he
recounts his story - which is a humourous journey through US-American
historical clichées of the 20th century -, his love to Sheela Edwads, the
evacuation of the American elite to a bombshelter just before the 3rd Wold
War broke out, and finally the elite's mass suicide. Only Tomata survived,
and now he's sorry he didn't join the others in their death ... until
someone tries to tear down the walls of his bombshelter, and Tomata shoots
him - the one who could have been company to the last man - down in
cold blood ... Now this is one weird film, a post-doomsday
musical with its tongue firmly in cheek, made patchwork style combining
newly shot song-and-dance numbers with stock footage, intentionally
mediocre special effects and a bit of animation thrown in just for good
measure, all set to punk and experimental music primarily by the LA punk
band the Screamers. Now one thing's for certain: Population: 1
is pretty much as far removed from your typical post-doomsday flick as
possible, but if you're looking for something bizarre, out-of-the-ordinary
that still is entertaining, you'll find yourself in for a treat.
