The early days of the Republic of China (circa 1912): Much of the
country is still controlled by local warlords, and if you are within their
favour, you can earn yourself a handsome lump of money, but if you cross
them, that could mean death. Also, there are revolutionaries around who
don't like those helping the warlords one bit. In front of this backdrop,
warlord Hu (Eddy Ko) hires a foursome of heroes to deliver four boxes to a
warlord friend of his, Jiao Long (Kuen Yat-Chu), four boxes of mysterious
content. None of the four heroes - postman Ma (Leung Ka-Yan), gambler Fu
Yun (Chow Yun-Fat), thief Yao Jie (Yuen Yat Chor) and miner Bu (Fan Mei
Sheng) - are easily convinced they are doing the right thing, but then
there's the lure of money ... Soon enough, our heroes are joined by a
girl, Guihua (Cherie Chung), who insists that they take her to Shanghai,
where her sister was sold into prostitution. None of the guys is
particularly eager to help her, but then they don't mind the girl's
company. On their way to Jiao Long, our heroes are repeatedly attacked by
everyone from bandits to rebels to who-knows-who. Finally, our quintet
has almost made it to Jiao Long's place when Ma makes Yao Jie, who seems
to be good friends with the rebels, confess why he accepted the
assignment: Turns out Jiao Long is holding his two sisters and only
promises their release upon delivery of the boxes. Upon learning this, Ma
decides it would be best if he and Yao Jie would enter Jiao Long's camp on
their own and only deliver half the boxes, to make sure Jiao Long remains
true to his word. However, while Ma and Yao Jie are away making their
delivery, Hu catches up witht he group, kills Fu Yun and Guihua and steals
the boxes, to deliver them to Jiao Long himself. Now the content of the
boxes is revealed, a machine gun and enough ammunition to last a lifetime.
The first thing Jiao Long does know is to gun down Yao Jie and his
sisters. Somehow Ma manages to escape, but only just. In the meantime, Bu
has found the corpses of Guihua and Fu Yun, and he is quick to vow revenge
- and storms the camp armed to the teeth with dynamite to blow up everyone
including himself. Now, only Ma is left alive ... and Hu, who is
hell-bent on killing Ma. Ma is a good fighter, but for the longest time it
seems he is no match for Hu's ninjutsu's fighting techniques and gadgets
(including a built-in flamethrower, a magnet to divert iron blades, a net,
and so on) - until he uses one of Bu's rather stupid looking wooden throw
darts - that has a stick of dynamite hidden inside. And thus, the villain
goes up with a bang. Maybe not a genre classic due to its a bit
too straightforward narrative and its a bit too bland characters, The
Postman Fights Back is still a very enjoyable movie: It's very
fast-paced, features many inventive fight sequences (including one on ice
skates), is directed with an eye for distinctive atmosphere, and thile the
film obviously takes itself seriously, it doesn't insist you do so as
well. In a word (or two), solid entertainment.
