Filmmakers Dixon (Barker) and Gav (Chuckie Steel) set out to make a
found footage horror spoof, and thus venture into the woods that according
to their script is infested with evil fairies to shoot some Blair
Witch Project style scenes with their only castmember Mark
(Williams) ... but Mark, who's supposed to play the special effects guy,
proves to be on the weird side and thus a major pain in the ass - until he
admits he has just been playing a part and proves to be a quite regular
guy, actually ... but an even bigger pain in the ass all the same. So Gav
and Dixon decide to write him out of the film - upon which he destroys
their camera ... and through that they actually get sucked into the movie,
find themselves not living in the real world anymore but in a (literal)
horror movie - but they figure they can find their way out of it, and the
best way to do so would be to stick to horror tropes, like the "final
girl" ... and suddenly they're accompanied by pregnant Evie (Rixon)
and Gav's ex Jane (West) - but the way out is much harder to find than
ever imagined ... Now up front I have to admit it's incredibly
hard to make proper sense of Preternatural - but that's one of the
points working in the film's favour, a film in which the lines between
(the film's) reality and fantasy are deliberately blurred, or rather
erased actually, and part of the film's both comedy and horror is that the
main characters seem to be in free fall through different layers of
reality. The other strong point is the total unpredictability of the film:
While the first two acts suggest a (very funny) Blair
Witch Project knock-off, everything (including the film's style
and narrative approach) is turned topsy turvy in the final act. And add to
that a strong cast that has great chemistry between them, and you've got a
movie that will really entertain you.
