David (William Wellman jr) is in prison, arrested by the forces of the Antichrist and about to face
execution, when he is broken out of jail by a young woman who appears to be a
member of the resistance movement, fighting for all things right with the
world. Together, they join forces and lay plans down to fix the forces of
evil, especially this nasty character named Jerry (horrible name for a
villain, but one of the best actors in this series, played by Thom Rachford. See
A Thief In The Night, A Distant Thunder and
Image Of The Beast reviews for
the entire plot).
Well, all is not as it seems, for this saint is actually a sinner, sent by
Jerry's boys to infiltrate the cells of resistance fighters, with David
leading the way as a dupe. God, however, puts a stop to all that, when a
series of plagues comes, including one nasty thing where nonbelievers break out
in boils while the believers do not. Thus the rescuer has to go into hiding
herself, to keep from being exposed. As she is seen, struggling against the
intense heat and these growths on her body, she removes a pieces of imitation
skin, showing her 666 mark of the beast beneath.
Enter also, a group of white faced, black robed mutants from right out of The
Omega Man, the victims of nuclear and chemical blasts that have devastated parts
of the planet, proving the Antichrist hasn't been all that great for the
nonbelievers and believers alike. Selfish son of a bitch! And people think
guys like Bush and Blair are bad leaders !!!!!!!!!!!!
Again, the Antichrist is barely touched upon in his own right, though again
you see his handiwork. Jerry is, for whatever reason, sold on this guy and
continues to do evil things in his honor. David, after his prison break,
continues to fight against him and eventually figures out what has been going
on. Realizing he has been set up and used, he develops a counter plan, but
doesn't have to take vengeance into his own hands, for lo and behold, Jesus
returns at the last minute, making everything right.
Jerry gets snuffed out, his crew gets snuffed out, presumedly the antichrist
gets his ass kicked and the new era has dawned.
Like with the Anitchrist, Jesus is not shown in blinding glory, crown of
thorns or anything of the kind. A bit anticlimatic for such anticipation in
four films.
Christians watching this will applaud and delight in the return of Jesus.
Nonchristians will look at the screen and ask, "What took so long
!?!"
Perhaps it was the need to make four movies out of this.
If scoffers and cynics can get past the preachiness of this all, it isn't that
bad of a horror flick, better than much of the secular crap that has come out
on DVD by modern day Ed Wood Jr types.
