A low-ranking gouvernment official takes a motley crew of drop-outs to
a ghost town in the middle of the wastelands to rid the place of a pack of
wild man-eating dogs. Soon our heroes have to notice however that the
dogs are not as easily to handle as they thought and that there are other
people in the ghost town who might have their own agenda ... What's worse,
their bus and only way to escape is first stolen then lost in quicksand,
and fear as well as cabin fever soon take their toll. And so eventually,
what started out as a simple mission ends in carnage, despair and
ultimately death for almost all of them. An interesting concept
set in great locations and carried by some very evocative camerawork, this
film still fails to totally convince, basically because its entire
ensemble cast just fails to be likeable. To a point that is of course
intended, as it's a story of human derelicts rather than heroes in shining
armour, but on the other hand, especially with films with a horror theme,
if you are not into the characters, it's hard to sympathize and the whole
thing fails to work on an emotional level. So what remains are some very
impressive pictures, and plenty of atmospheric shots, but not a film that
really gets to you ...
