Edward (Luc Merenda) has completely lost his memory in a car accident,
but then he's confronted with a criminal past he has no recollection of
and a wife, Sara (Senta Berger), he didn't even know he had. And it's all
orchestrated by one George (Bruno Corazzari) - a former accomplice
perhaps? - who wants to know where he has hidden the 1 million Dollars
worth of heroin ... which Edward can't of course remember in the
slightest, which in turn George doesn't believe. Eventually, Edward and
Sara, who have fallen in love all over again, decide to just leave their
home in Italy and go to New York - when Sara's leg is broken in a car
accident and Edward has a final showdown with George, during which he
kills him in self defense. Thing is, the whole affair is far from over
now, as Reinhold (Umberto Orsini), a close friend of Sara's, now turns out
to be one of the gang, and he - being a doctor on the side - has hidden
the heroin in Sara's cast ... thing is, Sara has found out, and now he
tries to get rid of her. It all leads to a fight featuring a chainsaw,
onto which Reinhold falls in the end to lose his own life. Like
most giallos (= Italian whodunnits), this one seems overly constructed,
employs quite a few unlikely plotdevices, and on closer inspection refuses
to make too much sense inthe end - but that said, Puzzle is a rather
likeable film, its direction is very stylish and manages to sustain
tension throughout, several suspense-setpieces work like a charm, and all
the actors are at least adequate. Maybe no outright genre classic, as Puzzle
lacks that certain something that sets it apart from the crowd, but still
a rather likeable and entertaining film.
