In a remote rural Indonesian village, Kohar is to marry Baita, much to
the dismay of Murni (Suzzanna), who lost her virginity to Kohar. Then
though, the wedding ceremony goes dreadfully wrong, with the bride seeing
dead people all around her - and the groom is quick to suspect black
magic, and to suspect Murni as the cause of all of this. And since Kohar
wants to get rid of Murni anyhow, he has quickl formed a mob to stone her.
Murni's life however is saved by a hermit (W.D.Mochtar), who not only
nurses her back to health but also teaches her black magic to have her
revenge on the villagers. Soon enough, the village is visited by all
kinds of horrors, and several of Murni's adversaries, including Kohar, die
horrible deaths - but soon Murni has to realize her teacher the hermit
wants to use her newly acquired magic powers to his own evil ends. Then
she meets Permana, a man from the city who doesn't know about her bad
reputation, and the two fall in love. Permana is also a devout Muslim, and
he shows the villagers that praying is the only way to oppose black magic
... much to the dismay of the hermit of course. So eventually, the hermit
sees to it that Murni catches Permana together with Baita - who stole
Kohar from her - and come to all the wrong conclusions. And before you
know it, Murni and the hermit release all the black magic they've got on
the village ... but then, Murni realizes the ulterior motives of her
teacher and learns that Permana is actually her brother, and she turns
against the hermit and in the final duel saves Permana and the villagers
from his evil powers, even if it costs her own life. Exotic
horror tale drawn from Indonesian folklore but carried by a series of
crude but effective gore effects - and all this is mixed together in such
a refreshingly and innocently naive way that one just can't help but love
this film, love it not in spite of but because of all its imperfections,
its apparently low budget and its rather simplistic plot. Recommended.
