On a patrol flight, spaceship Hydra under commander Van Dyke (Charlotte
Kerr) discovers a rogue planet, headed directly towards earth to destroy
it - and the ship also recieves transmissions of obviously alien origin
(the aliens in question being the so-called Frogs) that the rogue
planet is actually remote controlled. But then the Hydra gets into a
cosmic storm and is rendered unoperational and is soon enough presumed
lost. Commander McLane of the Orion wants to immediately go on a rescue
mission, also because Van Dyke was his former superior, but instead he and
his crew (Claus Holm, Friedrich G.Beckhaus,
Wolfgang Völz, Ursula Lillig, Eva Pflug) are assigned to save the earth,
which they try in many ways, from blowing up the Frogs' control station to
trying to blow up the planet using bombs. But ultimately they have to
steer their ship the Orion right into the planet (which actually blows up
the planet) and try to get to safety in their shuttles (called landsets in
the series) - but safety is the Hydra, and neither McLane nor his crew
know if the Hydra still exists, and if so, if she can be repaired and/or
controlled. But of course everything ends happily, and McLane manages to
save not only the earth but also his friend commander Van Dyke.
You either love it or hate it (I love it by the way): A great piece of
1960's German science fiction, with once again much running time eaten up
by bureaucratic procedure (a series mainstay), but still the episode
manages to deliver an exciting plot, and the special effects are quite
good in this one.
