3 students want to go deep into the woods to party. On
their way there, they have the poor judgement to pick up a hitchhiker,
Sébastian, despite radio reports there's a serialkiller on the prowl in
this neck of the woods. Of course, Sébastian turns out to be the
serialkiller before long ... but if you think our three heroes are in
troubles now, you are mistaken, because before you know it they drive
their car off a cliff (but totally survive it), then have to face an alien
sandworm that (just like the sandworms from Dune) hunts its prey by
sound, and the worm is a mighty hungry bugger. As if that
wasn't enough, serialkiller Sébastian doesn't regard that a good enough
reason to stop serialkilling, and thanks to the worm and Sébastian our
trio of students is soon down to one, who then teams up with a girl in a
desperate attempt to escape. Well, at least Sébastian becomes wormfood as
well. Anyways, our couple of survivors manage to attract the attention of
a police helicopter, but when it's about to land, the sandworm grabs it
out of the sky to eat it up. Then it grabs the girl, who rather by chance
gets hold of a power line to electrocute the beast. All's well that ends
well? I think not, because while our heroes might have succeeded to kill
one of the buggers rather by chance than anything else, a hundred or more
meteors bringing new sandworms to earth are already in striking distance
...
This film doesn't want to be anything more than your
typical mainstream monster movie - and it succeeds! This unfortunately
is a bad thing, because quite frankly, you'd be hard-pressed to find a
less original monster flick than this one, its story is predictable to the
point of utter boredom, the direction is as polished as it is impersonal,
the special effects are the typical CGI effects you have been disappointed
by a million times before, and the cast of cut-out characters are played
by your typical assembly of mediocre actors you have forgotten the very
next day. A total waste of time ...
