McGuire (Eddie Dunn) runs a trading post somewhere in Canada, & his
main trade is naturally furs ... which he, to maximize his profits, steals
from honest trappers with his gang. But in the process of this stealing,
one of his men, LeClerk (George Regas) shoots a Mountie, & to avoid a
run-in with the law, McGuire & LeClerk blame it on young &
innocent Tom (Robert 'Buddy' Shaw), one of McGuire's employees, & tell
him to go into hiding.
He goes into hiding - at his sister Anne's (Blanche Mehaffey) place,
for whom McGuire himself has romantic feelings but who is in love with
Mountie Stone (Bob Custer) ... & Stone is investigating the murder of
his fellow Mountie, & (correctly) assumes that McGuire has soemthing
to do with it.
Soon, he finds out that Tom is hiding at Anne's place, & also knows
there are Tom's fingerprints on the murderweapon, so he tricks Anne into
giving her brother up ... only when she finds out that Tom s wanted for
murder & will probably hang, she feels she has been taken for a dope
... & asks of all people McGuire for help - who of course has little
interest in the murdercase being actually solved & wants to take Anne
prisoner, but thanks to one of his men, who is actually an undercover
mountie, she can escape.
Soon afterwards, both McGuire & LeClerk are arrested, &
inspector Devlin (Will Walling) tricks them into a confession that
ultimately clears Tom of all charges.
& in the end, Stone gets the woman (Anne, in case you wondered).
An early sound Western, shot very much in style of the silent era, with
many actors (over-)acting in typical silent film style, long stretches of
film without dialogue or in fact any sound, & most of the actors still
at unease with dialogue. This all might make it somehow interesting to
watch, however the film is rather boring, definitely lacking in action,
& instead overemphasizing on its rather weak storyline.
