Ron Goossens (Tim Haars) has never achieved much in his life, but
there's one thing that he's really good at, and that's drinking - and his
drinking has gotten him in many a fucked up situation, including a car
stunt gone horribly wrong that he survived rather unexpectedly totally
unscathed - but totally drunk. Somehow, the video of this stunt goes viral
and becomes a YouTube sensation, and as a result he becomes an internet
celebrity without even knowing (or caring) why. Then Ron finds out his
wife is cheating on him, and yet he wants to keep her, especially since
she's presently pregnant. That said, she has long grown tired of Ron and
tells him he she'll only keep him if he has sex with Dutch superstar Bo
Maerten (Bo Maerten) - so to get even near her, Ron accepts the offer of
an agent to represent Ron as a stuntman, and soon enough he's on movie set
after movie set of movies, all starring Bo (since she's in every Dutch
movie anyways), and he tries to get friendly with her. But of course, he
is drunk all the time, and she's a strict non-drinker, she has the looks
to get everyone she desires while Ron isn't much of a man any woman can
desire, plus his ideas to woo her are not exactly up to scratch. Plus on
set as a stuntman, he has become an actual danger to her - unintentional
of course, but drinking and stunting just don't mix - as well as himself.
Ron however doesn't give up, even if his efforts and those of his friends
usually only make things worse. And then, after a near dead experience
when another stunt went horribly wrong, Ron decides to turn his life
around, to quit drinking and start acting responsibly - and somehow it
works, he almost scores with Bo even, but quits when he finds out that
that's not what he really wants, and his wife isn't who he really wants
either, and he finds new love in a set nurse who usually treats his
injuries. So everything great? Well, there's still that one stunt to
perform ... Now one thing up front, Ron Goossens, Low Budget
Stuntman isn't exactly a movie that will be remembered for its subtle
approach, it's painted in broad strokes, and driven by alcohol-related
(and maybe also -induced) humour, simplistic sight gags, and of course
gross-out jokes aplenty - but somehow it works, as in all its simplicity
the film manages to stay inventive enough to keep one entertained, Tim
Haars' stoic performance makes his character instantly likeable, anmd
there's a party movie feeling to the film that's rather infectuous. By
the way, Dutch viewers might get an additional kick out of the movie
because many Dutch celebrities are played by themselves (and make asses
out of themselves), and there are plenty of self-deprecating references to
the film team's earlier hit series New Kids - but even if
you're totally clueless about the Dutch film and TV world in general (as I
am), you'll totally get a kick out of all of this.
