Viva and Taylor Mead have gotten themselves a beach house where they
throw big parties for surfers and the like, just to become part of the
surfing subculture. Basically, They're looking for a husband for their
pregnant daughter Ingrid Superstar, but Taylor, who's openly homosexual,
also looks for a surfing boy for himself - this drives Viva to despair and
she wants a divorce ... not that she wouldn't have one affair after
another with surfing dudes. In the finale, Taylor persuades a surfer
(Tom Hompertz) to pee on him, which in his mind would finally make him a
surfer, even if he has never stood on a surfboard himself. San
Diego Surf is pretty much one of your typical Andy Warhol movie from
the later part of the 1960's: There is a certain narrative structure, but
mainly it's still bizarre characters hamming it up to various degrees,
there's little in point of actual camerawork or interesting editing ...
but somehow this all works for the movie, gives it a certain flair. And
also some of the dialogue is really funny (even if Taylor Mead overdoes
his part a bit), so it's definitely nice retro entertainment.
