Satanis: The Devil's Mass is the first documentary of Andon LaVey's up to that point condemned Church of Satan, consisting of
interviews with LaVey, his followers, his neighbours and his enemies, as
well as scenes from a Black Mass he and his followers conducted.
In the interviews, LaVey turns out to be a well-spoken, intelligent and
humourous man, his followers turn out to be very normal people with
perhaps some naughty (but harmless) fantasies, and they seem to be
decidedly less threatening than the Church's enemies who (in the film)
seem to be a malignant bunch full of hatred and driven by sexual
repressions.
The centerpiece of the film though are the clips from the Black Mass,
with LaVey himself disguised as Satan, a man in a bishop's costume getting
his ass whipped and an abundance of (female) nudity, all filmed very
professionally as if it was made for a dirty horror B-movie.
As a result, we don't really learn all that much about the Church of
Satan as such, nevertheless the film is a nice document of one of the
more obscure and more bizarre phenomena of late 1960's/early 70's pop
culture and can be totally enjoyed as a fun piece of nostalgia ...
