On the run from some psycho, Jennifer (Brenda Song) runs in front of a car and is run over. Fortunately, an ambulance is called right away and her life can be saved. And her husband Russell (Mike Vogel) rushes to her side to help her through all of this. Problem is, she can't remember him or anything about her past life, but he shows more than a bit patience to help her through all of this. And of course, she's rather happy to find out they live in a beautiful and big house in the mountains, so everything in terms of comfort one can imagine.

Meanwhile, Detective Page (Dennis Haysbert) finds some holes in the whole story, like how was her husband called when she got admitted to the hospital without any ID? And how did she get to where she was run over when her car was never found at the scene? And why won't she and her husband keep an appointment with him? And why has Russell given him a false address?

Jennifer too starts to doubt that everything's alright with her and Russell, and eventually she finds quite some evidence that things are wrong, like that their wedding photos are actually photoshopped and the like - but Russell soon figures she suspects him, and slowly his facade crumbles.

Detective Page meanwhile manages to track down Jennifer's parents - and finds them murdered. And at Jennifer and Russell's former workplace, he finds out that Russell isn't actually Russell but another co-worker who was secretly in love with Jennifer who got so jealous of the real Russell (Daniel Booko) that he killed him then wanted to kill her - but after her accident, he saw a second chance to make her his. The detective rushes to Jennifer's rescue, but it might already be too late ...

As a whole this is a nicely acted and competently put together thriller ... that really is nothing special as it just threads familiar paths and makes no effort to really shine. What's a bit annoying about the film though is that its premise is just too far-fetched to actually work. Basically Russell's plot to convince Jennifer she's his wife would demand a massive effort, and there is no chance Russell could have made all that effort, just on the odd chance that she might lose her memory in an accident. That's the part of the story that doesn't add up, and the other part that doesn't add up is why a detective would investigate a simple car accident in which the culprit called the authorities on the spot just as he was supposed to and would freely admit his guilt.

Now despite all this, Secret Obsession is no trainwreck for sure, it's just a film that won't stay in one's memories for too long.
