Julie (Jeanne Joe), quite obviously of Oriental heritage, is so ashamed
of her Chinese roots that she goes to great length to deny everything
that's Chinese about her - even her father (Victor Sen Yung), who runs a
Chinese restaurant. For some weird reason, that gets her into fatal danger
on a scrapyard, but fortunately, local superheroine Isis (JoAnna Cameron)
is on hand to save her. But to come to terms with herself being of Chinese
descent, she needs to fall into a well and be saved by her father (who in
turn is saved by Isis). In the end, Julie invites all her friends to
dad's restaurant and even boasts about Chinese cuisine. One of
the funnier episodes of Secrets of Isis, if not exactly for the
right reasons: In fact the plot, and especially the troubles Julie get
herself into, have so little to do with the message - respect your
roots - that it's almost ridiculous. But that works for the story and
not against it, because this way the message is transported in a more
subtle way ... though not too subtle, as the sequences depicting Chinese
culture are incredibly clichéd, and the scenes in which Julie denies her
roots are rather exaggerated - and all of this is part of why the
episode's fun.
