When Sari's stepmother's jewellery is stolen, stepmom blames Sari, and
Sari's half-sister Majun only supports her claim, mainly because she has
the hots for Nagul, Sari's boyfriend, and this way she tries to get dirt
on Sari ... because actually it was her who hired a thief to steal the
jewellery and hide it in Sari's room - which the thief couldn't do
because Sari was protected by the picture of her mother ... because you
know, Sari's mother was actually a demon, and she and her demonmaster now
watch over the girl. And when they learn about all the accusations against
Sari, they even release the Pocong (living dead tied into their shrouds
and therefore only able to hop) to haunt the living. After much to and
fro, during which Majun repeatedly tries to get her hands on Nagul and
repeatedly runs across Pocong, she assembles her cronies in her fight
against Sari to go head to head against the Pocong ... but her cronies
are killed and she only just manages to escape. Sari and Nagul meanwhile
visit a priest to put an end to the pocong horror, and he finally gets
Sari's mother to face Majun directly (after she has been scared out of her
wits) ... and ultimately, Majun admits to her family and Sari's mother
alike that all the wrong that has been happening to Sari was actually her
doing - upon which Sari proves to be magnanimous and forgives her ... and
the pocong disappear. A kind of guilty pleasure: Setan
Pocong is by no means a good movie in any sense of the word - the plot
is as clichéd as it is silly, the special effects are rather rudimentary,
and hopping dead just look ridiculous -, yet in its own imperfect, even
crude way, the film is incredibly watchable ... much like Ed Wood-films
are watchable in fact. Plus there is one unforgettable scene in Setan
Pocong, when drunk Nagul runs across a kid-pocong, and knowing nothing
better to do, gives it beer to drink - upon which the kid pocong can't but
stumble around uncontrollably. Then papa pocong arrives to give his kid a
scolding (!).
