Somewhere down South: Emily (Lee Holland) is a shanty tramp, a girl who likes to sleep around, and
collect for it, too. When she however hears the sermon of wandering preacher
Brother Fowler, she is moved, and persuades him to later welcome her for some
private counselling in his trailer. But since the Brother does not have time
until way after midnight, the Shanty Tramp has some hours to kill, & does
so by going to a bar, picking up the next guy.
However, it is not long before a gang of bikers, the Rats, raid the club
& beat up her guy. Emily, instead of feeling pity U(or anything else),
starts geting friendly - very friendly - with Savage, the leader of the Rats.
But in the preacher's tent, Emily has also caught the eyes of a young black
man, Daniel, who despite the warnings of his mother that it is dangerous for a
black man to go to town after dark, decides to go looking for the Shanty Tramp
- & just in time for Emily, too, since she & Savage have a slight
disagreeement over wether hw would pay her for some sexual services, & he
decides to rape her as a consequence, only to be struck down by Daniel. Emily
agrees to give Daniel his just reward (& you might guess what that is),
later that night in the barn ...
Savage meanwhile assembles the Rats to have his vengeance on Daniel, &
they find out where he lives in no time, but when they find only his mother is
at home, they kill her in his stead, then scram.
Emily meanwhile has sex with Daniel when her alcoholic father catches them,
& she, out of the blue, claims to have been raped. Pops organizes a
bloodthirsty racist mob in no time, & with dogs, guns & Emily's help
they pick up Daniel's trail in no time, & only do not manage to catch &
lynch him because he has a fatal car accident before that ...
But Emily's father has a clear moment, all of a sudden sees through the lies
of his daughter & decides tzo give her the belting of her life - so brutal
that she sees no way out but to kill him with a kitchen knife in self defense
...
She escapes the approaching police, if just, & makes it to Brother
Fowler's trailer only minutes before he leaves ... He though seems to be less
interested into counselling but more into some rather worldly pleasures
("Bernie, I'm gonna show that Shanty Tramp the Power and the Glory"
he boasts to his assistant).
Reading this synopsis, the movie seems to be much more ambitious than it
really is, Shanty Tramp is actually a cheap sexploitation drama with
it's cynical subplots about racism & moneygrabbing travelling preachers
tagged on rather for their thrills than as social commentary. However, the
relentless cynisism of the movie, its obvious budgetary limitations, its
careless direction & uncontrolled acting all lend Shanty Tramp the
unbeatable charms of a b-sexmovie of yesteryear.
