Trouble is brewing in the rikshaw business when the (good) Western compamy
& the (evil) Eastern company compete over supremacy. But Eastern doesn't
necessarily play fair, ignoring all agreements they have with Western, &
even fighting for customers quite violently (& always winning).
Soon the streets become a battleground for rikshaw pullers, & all of
them - Eastern or Western - take part in the fights - all except Lin, who has
promised his blind wife Shu Ying to never fight (as her father was killed in a
fight, & she fears the same will happen to Lin).
However, when Eastern company's main bullie Che Pao beats up one of his
colleages all too badly, Lin gets angry enough to break his oath, & he
gives Che Pao the beating of his life. Che Pao - feeling humiliated - however
won't let that go down easily, & soon he organizes an ambush ... only to be
defeated by Lin again ... much to the dismay of Eastern's boss Master Choi, who
soon sends his son with a gang of thugs off to Lin's house, where they, not
finding Lin, rape his wife.
When Lin returns home, still finding the assailants on the scene, his rage
knows no limits & he gives Choi's son such a fierce beating that he later
dies from his injuries in his father's arms ...
This in turn enrages Master Choi, who soon kidnaps Lin's wife. Lin,
desperate to free her, agrees on a crooked deal with Choi to give himself up to
him in exchange for his wife. But when Lin is tightly tied up, Choi shows
little intent to release the blind woman - who, not wanting to cause her hjubby
any more worries, spontaneously kills herself.
Lin is left with the Eastern Company thughs neatly tied up, & he is
fiercely tortured, has however still enough power in him to free himself, &
let 2 (girl-)friends hide him in the country.
However, the girls are somehow followed by Eastern Company thugs & soon
killed too, & now it's all-out battle Lin versus the Eastern Company ...
which - need I say it ? - Lin wins, even killing Master Choi in the end.
What could have been a parable of violence only creating more violence (at
least the story strongly hints at it) is actually little more than a martial
arts showcase with rather limited narrative build-up, & no attempt is made
to rise above a familiar (& overused) revenge plot. Rather boring actually.
