An anonymous man (Matsumoto Hitoshi) wakes up in a doorless white room in his pyjamas, with no recollection of how he got there (and no explanation is given to the audience, neither), and no idea how top get out. The room is completely empty, but strange-looking switches - which will eventually turn out to be angel penisses, protrude from the walls. Whenever the man presses one of the penisses, some object is thrown into the room from nowhere, and every penis is linked to one specific (yet random) object. Objects include chopsticks, a vase, soy sauce, mangas, a bonsai and a Massai warrior. Eventually, the man finds the angel penis to open a door to wherever, but whenever he has made it from the penis in question to the door, it's sealed off again - so the man makes up elaborate plans to get there in time, and eventually he also gets the key to the door and everything ... and he actually makes it - to then find out the door only leads to a small and empty wardrobe, but once he has realized that, his way to his former room full of angel penisses is already sealed off. And the wardrobe is essentially empty, there are not even more angel penisses around ...

Eventually, the man finds a way to slide aside one of the walls of the wardrobe, and all of a sudden, he finds himself in what seems to be an endless hallway - that eventually only leads to another, bigger room full of angel penisses. Touching angel penisses in this room though doesn't cause anything at all ... or does it?

Mexico: The Escargot Man, a masked wrestler on a losing streak, fights yet another match against opponents that could have him for breakfast, and soon enough he runs out of stem, too, and is about to be clobbered ... when the man in the white room presses another of the angel penisses, and Escargot Man's neck grows to grotesque length, so he can head-butt his opponent who's several feet away. Unfortunately, the man in the white room presses the exact same angel penis a few more times, and so Escargot Man headbutts everyone around him, including the referee, his tagteam partner and his son ...

The man in the white room figures he can climb up to the top of the room on the angel penisses, where there might be an exit, and with any penis he touches, he causes something in the outside world, may this be small occurences (like the opening of a flower) or things that made the news (like the shoe-throwing attack on George W.Bush).

Eventually, the man makes it all the way to the top - only to find a very big angel penis ...

Somehow, you might occasionally be reminded of films like Cube or Saw when watching Shinboru, but essentially, this film - and you might have guessed that from my synopsis - is pure madness, madness in a surreal sort of way. And it's also hilarious, especially due to its totally absurd premise and its total refusal to deliver any explanation at all for the on-screen goings-on - and due to the fact that the gags that are thrown into the film are all really funny. Add to this a relatively subtle directorial effort and a central performance by director Matsumoto Hitoshi himself that manages to remain this side of obnoxious throughout, and you're left with a pretty amusing film.

Recommended.
