Poor Mary Lou (Louise Small) has fallen for some racketeer, who, under
a false pretense, wanted to kidnap her & force her working in a
brothel. Fortunately she got away, & soon the police is informed &
tries to crack down on the place the racketeers tried to get her to ...
but all the gangsters who run that place are long gone, & the
cops only find a few frightened girls who weere forced into prostitution.
Phil (Donald Reed), a freelance reporter & the boyfriend of Mary
Lou's best friend Donna (Lona Andre) learns about this though, smells a
story & sells it to a newspaper editor (William Royle), who in his
paper plans a crusade against prostitution rackets like this one.
The boss of the racket though, Jim Murray (Wheeler Oakman), is a
regular customer at the barbershop Donna works at, & somehow Donna has
caught his eye. & not only that, Donna's boss, Belle (Florence Dudley)
has her hands in the racket as well, as she places ads in rural
newspapers, to lure innocent country bumbkins to the big city offering
work in the barbershop, when really she only collects girls for Jim's
brothels.
Together, Belle & Jim think of a way to get rid of Donna's
boyfriend & get her to work for them as you-know-what ... &
furthermore Jim wants to try her out too. Soon, they plant marked money on
Phil & have him arrested for it, & when Donna tries to raise the
bail money, she finds out the only one with that kind of money - &
also a lawyer at his hand - is Jim, so she has to date him a few times ...
only Jim's lawyer naturally doesn't play fair, doesn't pay the bail &
advices Phil to plead guilty.
Donna smells a rat, but still agrees tzo date jim once more - but not
before she has talked to Phil's newspaper editor & the chief of
police, & finds out the 2 of them more or less share her suspicions.
But when Donna meets Jim, at Belle's new club, not only does she
find out the club is actually a whorehouse & she might be the new
attraction, but she also finds out that Jim desperately tries to bed her,
by force if necessary.
The same night though, several of Jim's competitors & disappointed
employees have gathered at the club & plan to take it over - by force
if needed. It all culminates in a big shoot-out, & when the police
arrives to raid the place, pretty much all of the bad guys are already
dead. Donna is saved though, & Phil is not only released & gets to
write the story of his life, he also finally has enogh money to marry
Donna.
Though the title promises unadulterated sleaze, Slaves in Bondage
might look tame by today's standards (but was probably considered sleazy
in its time, for the unusual topic alone). However, apart from that, the
film is a lively crime drama, moving at a considerable pace & never
letting the tension go. One of the best films in director Elmer Clifton's
remarkably uneven output.
