Botanist Parrish (Paul Langton) and photographer Wells (Leslie Denison)
come to the Himalaya to study plantlife ... and behave like perfect
assholes when something - a Yeti probably - has abducted the wife of their
head sherpa (Teru Shimada) by simply not allowing the sherpas to organize
a recuse party. The sherpas however steal Parrish and Wells' weapons, take
them captives, and go after the Yetis anyhow. Neither Parrish nor Wells do
believe in Yetis of course and do everything to everything to sabotage the
sherpas' rescue mission - until they find a Yeti that gets knocked out
rather by accident, and now our two assholes manage to disarm the sherpas
and see to it that the creature is sent to a country that has nothing to
do with the Himalayas or the Yeti, the USA of course. Immigration however
is unsure how to deal with the Yeti, so the creature has to be kept
confined in a storeroom overnight - but escapes and terrorizes whatever
city it's in. Parrish however teams up with a local policeman, Lt Dunbar
(William Phipps), and between the two of them, they make up a plan to
capture and kill the creature.
Pretty bad piece of low budget
science fiction, not so much for its uninspired direction, its lack of
actual suspense, or its pathetic monster(-suit) but first and foremost for
its particularly unlikeable heroes, ignorant and even racist Westerners
that look down on foreigners simply because they don't conform with their
world views and their version of civilisation - and yet, these people are
presented to us as heroes. Sure, from a film from more than 55 years ago
you can't expect nearly the same level of political correctness as from
today's cinema, but the way the protagonists in this film behave is almost
despicable even by much lower standards. Actually, this all makes this
film pretty annoying, and not even funny to watch.
