Once, Solomon Kane (James Purefoy) was a mercenary, and pretty much the
most violent and ruthless of them all - but after running into a nest of
demons and finding out his soul is forfeit to the devil, he renounced his
evil ways and choose life in a monastery ... until being expelled after
the abbott (Robert Russell) after he had a prophetic dream. Trying to make
it back to his family castle, Kane's ambushed and since he has taken a vow
of non-violence, he's easily overcome and left to die - but the
Crowthorns, a family of puritans on their way to the New World, take him
in and nurse him back to health. But then they are slaughtered before his
very eyes by the goons of local baddie Malachi (Jason Flemyng), all but
the lovely daughter of the family Meredith (Rachel Hurd-Wood). Of course,
Kane renounces his vow of non-violence ... and has to do a lot of fighting
until he finds out Malachi resides at the Kane family castle and is in
league with Kane's older brother Marcus (Samuel Roukin), whom Kane
believed he had killed in an accident when a child. But even if Kane knows
where Meredith is held now, it's still another thing actually entering the
castle, free her and destroy Malachi and company ...
Granted, Solomon Kane is pretty atmospheric and looks
very ok - but on a story level it's basically a complete letdown,
basically because the plot, the situations, the twists, the characters all
feel completely generic, and thus the thing is predictable as hell. Plus,
the lead character is given no character arc at all, the audience is
pretty much just supposed to accept him as a hero and that's it. Sure he
was once a baddie, but he renounces his evil ways in the first five
minutes and from that point does no wrong and is invincible. And with this
as a given, it's hard to keep up interest for the on-screen goings on.
