Laura (Andi Matichak) has escaped the clutches of a cult several years
ago, but these days she seems to be nothing if not a loving mother to her
son David (Luke David Blumm), and there life somewhere in smalltown, USA,
is nothing if not normal, and bordering the dull - until one night, she
finds a bunch of people in David's room standing around his bed, and
totally panics in a way that wakes half the neighbourhood ... but when the
police arrive to take a look, they find David in his room alone, and no
clues of intruders. Still, detective Paul (Emile Hirsch) takes her
statement very seriously and tries to calm her in any which way he can.
And then David has a medical emergency, inasmuch as he suffers from
convulsions and has rashes all over his body, and the doctors don't have a
clue what's going on but think whatever it is is terminal - until David
recovers without any lasting effects. But then the same thing happens a
few days later, and while in hospital, Laura hears two doctors talking,
and apparently they're with the cult Laura has escaped from and want to
kidnap David. So Laura grabs David and leaves him with a neighbour (Erin
Bradley Dangar) to grab a few things for a hasty getaway - but when she
returns, the neighbour's dead and David's feasting on her blood. She still
grabs her son and they drive cross country as Laura knows to find out
what's going on she has to go back to her roots. On the way though, she
has to feed David, who these days lives only on human blood. Detective
Paul and his partner Steve (Cranston Johnson) follow her trail of blood,
though always arrive a few hours too late it seems. They believe now
though that Laura is delusional, as they find no proof she has ever been
with a cult but hard evidence that her father has made her the centerpiece
of a child prostitution ring. Steve eventually tries to take her down with
a squad, but she manages to somehow shoot them all dead our of sheer
panic. And Paul is only able to catch up with her when she tries to summon
a demon who's David's father and threatens to kill the boy should the
demon not arrive ... A deliberately slowburn but very tight
piece of horror cinema that finds the right balance between its gory bits
and atmospheric filmmaking, and a film that lives and breathes from its
clever structure that never reveals more to the audience than it
absolutely has to, keeping one guessing until the end (and the post finale
punchline sure holds another surprise) and this way keeping things tense
throughout. And really fine performances by all involved certainly help
making this one very solid genre entertainment.
