Food rations are scarce among the players, and eventually small-fry gangster Jang Deok-su
(Heo Sung-tae) gets into an altercation over food with one of the other
players (Min Tae-Yul) - and kills him. And even though that happened under
the watchful eyes of the guards, it leads to no repercussions whatsoever -
which means tonight there will be an all-out war for the players to settle
old scores. And despite their arguments earlier, hero of the piece Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae)
offers pickpocket Kang Sae-byeok (Hoyeon) to join his small group in the
looming war as she has had an altercation with Jang Deok-su before. In
an at first unrelated plot, Byeong-ki (Yoo Seong-ju), a disgraced surgeon,
has a deal with some of the guards to behind the scenes remove organs from
the killed players to sell them on the black market. And to keep this deal
up as long as possible, he's always tipped off about what the next game
will be. So for the night's warfare, Byeong-ki sides with Jang Deok-su,
offering intel about the next game in exchange for protection. The
night's battle, which was actually planned by the higher-ups of the games,
leaves many dead, but it's already off to the next game - tug o' war, with
the losers being pulled into an abyss and the fall meaning almost certain
death, with those who survive against all odds being shot by the guards.
Of course, all of the main characters survive, the "good guys"
because they listened to advice from
dementia-plagued Oh Il-nam (Oh Yeong-so), normally the weakest link in the
chain, of how to beat the odds ...
With the organ-thieving doctor, yet a new plotline is opened -
and not in the episodes favour as it seems to be a little too all over the
place, with attention actually being diverted from the main characters.
That said, the central battle scene is impressively and excitingly
directed though, and the tug o' war scene sure has the intended suspense
and shock value, so in all the episode's sure worth your while.
