An unmanned underwater probe has been gone missing after having been
sucked into a volcano, so supersub Stingray, manned by captain Troy
Tempest, communications officer Phones and mute tailless mermaid Marina,
goes looking for it ... and is sucked into the volcano as well. Troy and
Phones go exploring and find two creatures, obviously the last two
survivors of an highly developed underwater race who built their city
inside the volcano's shaft (not such a good idea for a highly developed
civilisation, actually), which eventually destroyed the whole city except
for the room the two were in. Now though they want to move, as the volcano
is to erupt again, and to this end they plan to hijack Stingray while
leaving Troy and Phones behind to die in the volcano eruption. Thing is,
Marina, seeing the two strangers approaching, closes the hatches of the
sub, so the creatures have to return to fetch Troy and Phones, who easily
overcome the creatures and make it out of the volcano just in time before
the eruption, plus they even save the lives of their adversaries ...
Even when adhering to science fiction logic, this episode stretches
credibility quite a bit: Why would an allegedly highly developed race
build a city inside a volcano's shaft ? This being the central
point of the plot, this episode fails to properly work. On the other hand
though, the effects depicting the hot molten lava slowly eating up the
room Troy and Phones are held at are pretty cool, which makes this one
watchable after all.
