Someone is sabotaging all of us surface dwellers efforts to drill for
oil on th ebottom of the ocean, so the WASP (World Aquanaut Security
Patrol) sends the super-submarine Stingray plus crew - hero Troy Tempest,
his sidekick Phones, secretary Atlanta and mute mermaid Marina - to the
next oilrig to investigate ... and before you know it, Atlanta is
kidnapped and a bomb is attached to Stingray that only doesn't go off
thanks to a cute little seal.
Eventually, Stingray picks up the trail of Atlanta (or rather her
kidnappers) and goes on a rescue mission, while Atlanta learns that her
kidnappers are actually a peaceful people living on the ocean floor who
mistook the oil drills for invasion weapons - but they are not in the
least opposed to the surface dwellers drilling for oil, if that's all they
want ... so the whole thing was a misunderstanding - but now Stingray
comes on a rescue mission, and Stingray doesn't come unarmed. In the
end, when Stingray has already fired a mission that could destroy the
whole underwater kingdom, Atlanta can only just send a morsecode message
to the crew to blow up the missile prematurely - and both the underwater
kingdom and the surface dwellers' oilrigs are saved in one go. Stingray
is best when action is involved, as some of the series' special effects
are looking spectacular even today. Stingray is by far less
impressive when drama is involved, as puppets as such are incapable of
showing emotions, so whenever it comes to lengthy dialogue scenes, the
show gets rather dull. This episode of Stingray does feature
a few nice action scenes, true, but after some exciting build-up the
peaceful resolution of the whole affair is a bit of a letdown and doesn't
really live up to its promises.
