Up until very recently, Elizabeth (Heather Graham) was a respected
psychiatrist who has actually written the definite book on out-of-body
experiences - but now she has brutally killed a man, which has landed her
locked up in an insane asylum. And now Elizabeth's best friend Dr. Upton
(Barbara Crampton) wants to find out why. Apparently it all started when a
young man, Asa (Judah Lewis), showed up at her office's doorstep and help
regarding threatment for out-of-body experiences - in other worlds her
field exactly. Thing is, Asa believes he's time and again possessed by his
father - and then "!transforms" into his father before her very
eyes. Of course, there's a perfectly simple (psycho-)logical explanation
to this, and yet she feels compelled to help the boy. She pays a visit to
his home, but doesn't find him but his father Ephraim (Bruce Davison), an
old man suffering from a weak heart - and bad manners. Their conversation
is rather fruitless though, but later Elizabeth receives another call from
Asa, and rushing to his home, she finds him standing over the dying body
of his father - but rather than asking for her help reviving him he wants
to decapitate the old man. Thing is, suddenly Asa changes again and
seduces her while his father dies - but when they have sex, they suddenly
change personalities, if only for a few seconds, but long enough to
convince Elizabeth that everything Asa has said is true, and he's now
probably possessed by his father. And as if to prove this, Asa severs his
father's head to prevent the real Asa from getting his body back again.
Thing is, the old man has enjoyed being a woman, so he soon again swaps
bodies with her, and while Elizabeth's body is caught in Asa's body that
has been chained up, Asa's dad in her body has sex with her husband
(Jonathon Schaech), and rough sex at that. Back in her own body, Elizabeth
has by now realized in what kind of danger she is, and she brutally tries
to kill Asa - or rather Asa's dad in his body since Asa's mind has already
been killed for good. A crime she's not only arrested and thrown into an
insane asylum for, she also has to learn Asa's dad is not one to easily be
killed ... Originally written by Dennis Paoli for Stuart Gordon
as another one of his
Lovecraft adaptations, Gordon unfortunately died before he
could make the movie - but fortunately the script didn't go to waste but
was picked up by a filmmaker with a deep respect for Stuart Gordon and
1980s and 90s straight-to-video horror in general, so this has turned into
a wonderfully absurd tale of terror full of gore, of macabre and grotesque
imagery, and over-the-top setpieces, all based on a well-structured and
-balanced script. And while the tongue's firmly in cheek in the movie, the
actors still play it straight to not spoil the horror side of the
proceedings. And the result is not only a nice throwback but a pretty good
shocker in its own right.
