It's summer holidays and Davey (Graham Verchere), a 15 year old boy,
earns his keep as a paperboy, and as such he gets to learn quite a bit
about his neighbours. And then he reads about a boy his age who has gone
missing, and thinks he has seen that boy with Mackey (Rich Sommer), one of
his customers and the local head of police, only a couple of days ago. And
since he has always been a curious kid and believes in all kinds of
conspiracy theories, he persuades his friends (Judah Lewis, Caleb Emery,
Cory Gruter-Andrew) to help him investigate the man. And indeed, the group
finds more and more circumstantial evidence against Mackey, but nothing
that really sticks - so they go further and futher, ultimately digging up
his garden ... and are caught by Davey's parents (Jason Gray-Stanford,
Shauna Johannesen) and are actually made to apologize to Mackey - who is
quick to forgive them, and while his friends are happy to just drop the
whole thing, Davey thinks now Mackey is on guard. And when Mackey actually
makes an arrest in the very thing Davey's suspecting him for, Davey knows
he must proactively find solid evidence - which he can't do without
actually breaking and entering Mackey's place - but that might be more
dangerous that even he himself could imagine ... While
obviously playing a riff on the current nostalgia craze and very
obviously being inspired by the Amblin
coming-of-age/adventure mash-ups of the 1980s by using tons of tropes from
those movies in the framework of a Rear Window-like narrative, Summer
of 84 nevertheless manages to totally come into its own by telling its
well-hung story in an original and engaging way, also carried by a strong
ensemble cast. Plus, the very downbeat ending is what truly makes the
film, giving it a suitable darkness the films it pays hommage to usually
missed ...
