This episode starts on a bit of a dark note, as Ken (Yosuke Okada), Red
Baron's pilot, sees his brother Kenichiro
(Nobuyuki Ishida) tied to a cross and blown to pieces while Ken himself is
busy fighting one of the Iron Alliance's giant robots, which he can only
defeat with the help of the SSI via radio. Then though, he and inspector
Komano (Isao Tamagawa) are lured into a trap, upon which Ken calls Red
Baron to the rescue - which was of course the crucial part of the trap as
the Iron Alliance wanted to this way get hold of Red Baron. However, Red
Baron is keyed to Ken's voice and fingerprings, so actually only he can
pilot the robot. And soon enough he manages to set the inspector free and
to escape himself to beat another of the Iron Alliance's robots to a pulp.
Series like Super Robot Red Baron weren't made to rate
especially highly on the originality scale, and bearing that in mind, this
episode actually doesn't come across as too formulaic - compared to
similar fare of its ilk that is. Where this episode (and the series as a
whole) falls short though is its robots that look all rather bulky and
have little in terms of special features or grotesqueries, which in turn
makes the robot fights rather stale then. Still fun nostalgia mind you,
just nothing beyond just that I'm afraid.
