An uncanny documentary that is loved by bullfight fans, shocking to
others and the absolute horror of animal lovers anywhere, this 1990's-era
documentary is still in print and being sold on ebay as well as by mail
order in varied places. In the tradition of The Faces Of Death,
the director shot multiple bullfights then edited highlights together to
make one big documentary ... with no words or narration. The action
speaks for itself. Thrilling to those who love the bullfight. Stomach
turning to those who do not.
The caste system in Mexico is seen visibly too, with the opening
sequence of a poor beggar boy playing a toy accordion for chump change,
then shifting to the high priced bullring band, the glitz and glamor of
the bullfight, and the throng of rich tourists crossing the border to
see the action.
Filmed in Tijuana, the movie offers nostalgic glimpses of figures from
the past who have either reitred or died (from natural casues or in one
case a self inflicted gunshot woundm . None of those filmed died in the
bullring, though there are several bad gorings and close calls shown in
this as well). Curro Rivera, Mayito, David Silveti (the gunshot
to the head), Alejandro Silveti, Rafaelillo, the Armillitas, Maurico
Portillo, Mariano Ramos, Manolo Arruza and the Sanchez-brothers are some
of those shown on the screen.
The film might be noteworthy for it places a focus on Mexico rather than
Spain. Countless dramas such as Currito de la Cruz, Sangre en El
Ruedo,
Traje de Oro, Chantaje Por Un Torero, Matador,
etc. etc. ... have all
been set in Madrid or Sevilla. Documentaries on El Fandi, Manolete,
Granero, Joselito, Cordobes and the like again focus on Spanish
bullfighters. The Mexicans, for what it is worth, have been ignored with
their bullfights and bullfighters, for the most part. This
production does the exact opposite and throws Mexican bullfighting into
the limelight.
This one is not for everyone. Be warned that some of the gorings are
graphic, the butchery of the bull for meat after it has been killed will
make many people want to swear off meat forever and you won't see this
being shown at any PETA-conventions.
