To escape her abusive boyfriend Josh (Kevin Meyer), college student
Leslie (Stacy Logan) joins her friend Janna (Michelle Merchant) to go to
Tenkiller Lake for the summer, where she soon meets Tor (Michael Shamus
Wiles), your typical nice guy, who seems to be just as drawn to her as she
is drawn to him. Everything seems to be perfect at Tenkiller Lake -
wouldn't Leslie soon start to receive threatening phonecalls she thinks
are from Josh ... ah yeah, and then there's the fact that Tor is actually
a madman killing off all those close to her, including in the finale Janna
and Josh, who has just caught up with Leslie. Then Tor knocks Leslie out,
puts her into his boat and rows out to the open lake ... but when Leslie
comes to, she topples the boat over and hastily makes for the shore while
Tor, who apparently can't swim, drowns. I'm not a big fan of
slasher movies as it is, and this isn't even a good one. Actually, one
can't shake the feeling that Terror at Tenkiller desperately tries
to be more than just another slasher, as it takes up an awful lot of
screentime to show Leslie's struggle to become independent, to shake those
shackles called parents and boyfriend, in a word, to finally grow up. To
tell such a story is a lofty goal indeed, a goal the film falls several
miles short of reaching, because instead of telling the story with some
insight and empathy, the script is only filled with an incredible number
of clichés and pointless dialogue that only bore the discriminating
viewer to death. That the actors are uniformly not up for the task (in
fact, they are even bad in the very modest thespian realm of slasher
cinema) doesn't help one bit either. But apart from all of that, Terror
at Tenkiller doesn't even work as a formulaic shocker, the murders are
rather bloodless and too few and far between, there is virtually no
suspense because the murderer is revealed way too soon, the finally lacks
any kind of impact, and the whole thing seriously lacks atmosphere. Rather
a film to stay away from ...
