Detective Neimand (Marshall Foster) has just come to quite some honours
for hunting down the would-be assassin (Ed Gage) of Senator Gier (Jeff
Odachowski), even if that man was actually shot dead by his partner
Detective Mendax (Brian C. Chenworth). As a thank you (of sorts), the
Senator asks Neimand to track down "the Wake", an alleged
terrorist organisation, who might be behind the assassination attempt. But
instead of tracking them down, they track him down, take him captive, then
release him with sunglasses - that help him to see that the whole world is
just based on subliminal messages hidden in billboards, store marquees and
the like, and has long been infiltrated by aliens, who hide in the guise
of ordinary people - including Neimand's partner Mendax. Of course, the
Senator is part of this conspiracy and has actually used Neimand to get a
lead on the Wake - but now that Neimand knows about the whole affair, he
has become a liability ... Of course, They Still Live is
a fan film, based on John Carpenter's rather popluar They
Live - so if you've seen Carpenter's earlier film, you'll know the
premise and outline of this one and will be able to guess quite a bit of They
Still Live's story - but that said, this film never even remotely
tries to hide its influences on one side, on the other, Chris R. Notarile,
the probably most prolific maker of fan films, is a versatile enough
writer and director to model an engaging story around the premise that
manages to stand on its own two feet, and that's well enough paced and
features enough action to keep one well-entertained throughout the movie's
15 or so minutes of running time, whether or not you got all the They
Live - or you're even fond of that movie for that matter. And
if this has at all gotten you interested, you can watch the movie here:
