The army's latest toy, the Sidewinder - a sort of tank on stilts -
falls into a crater, and ince it lands sideways, it can't get out of the
hole by its own. Rescue operations are soon under way, but since it's
burning hot down in the crater, there's not so much the army can do, while
the Sidewinder's crew starts to feel the heat - literally. Enter a team
of International Rescue, who comes flying by their Thunderbirds, but to
actually rescue the Sidewinder, they use a giant drilling machine called
the Mole, and thanks to it, they got the Sidewinder out in no time. The
Sidewinder, though probably totally impractical in real life, looks good
on film, and most of thje special effects of this episode are extremely
well-done (as much could be expected from an Anderson-production though),
but the main emphasis of this episode is human drama - and the series' dolls are just not
good at that, they are literally too wooden for that kind of plot - so
what could have been a (somehwat cheesy) suspense piece with human actors
has turned into nothing but a dull, lifeless story the way kit is. Plus:
If the emphasis of Thunderbirds is on its fantastic flying
machines, why is there next to no use made of them in this episode?
