Some cosmic ray from outer space, when combined with the rays of the
sun, can turn 2-dimensional drawings into 3-dimensional beings, and thus,
when it hits the monster-drawing of Mushiba, a young boy whose
monster-drawings have been ridiculed by his friends, and his creation
Gabadon is turned into a giant monster, he suddenly is the star of his
class. Thing is, giant monster Gabadon does little but sleeping, and as
long as it's not attacked, it's perfectly harmless. And once night falls,
it vanishes (since it needed the sunrays for its creation). A bit of a
disappointment for the kids, but the Science Patrol, that's on the job of
course, decides to not attack Gabadon the next day should it come back.
Gabadon does of course come back, this time much fiercer looking, since
Mushiba and his friends made a few adjustments to the original drawing,
but again, it just sleeps the day away. But even though Gabadon is
perfectly harmless, it is trouble since because of the monster, Tokyo,
where the monster resides, was evacuated, which causes incalculable
economical problems. The Science Patrol is looking for a solution, and the
proposal to simply erase the drawing (which would work) is quickly turned
down as too simple for an organisation as advanced as the Science Patrol.
Instead it is decided to hit it with all the Patrol has got, tanks,
fighterjets and whatnot, at the risk of human life. Gabadon is not much
into fighting though, but it is able to withstand almost everything thrown
at it anyways - until giant robot Ultraman (Bin Furuya) stops by, wrestles
down the monster and then takes it to outer space - much to the
disappointment of all the kids behind it who have come to love their
monster ... Of course, the concept of this childish as can be,
but somehow it works as a parable of the clash of children's imagination
versus adult so-called reasoning - with the kids having the upper hand at
least in my mind. This is not a message movie though, but a TV-campfest
(like all of the Ultraman-series, actually), and as such
it's good, silly, harmless fun.
