Back-to-school-time will be difficult for Elena (Nina Dobrev), mainly
because she has lost her parents in a car accident not long ago and is
still suffering from this - and the mere fact that everybody feels
compelled to show some concern about her doesn't help much either. Then
though a new guy shows up at school, Stefan (Paul Wesley), an attractive
and sensitive young man who claims he has experienced some loss himself
not long ago and who writes a diary, just like Elena - and wouldn't you
know it, Elena and Stefan hit it off pretty much right away ... What
Elena doesn't know though (and he sure enough won't tell her) is that
Stefan's a vampire. That's not too bad because he has given up drinking
human blood long ago and is feeding himself on squirrels. Still, people
around town are dying in vampire killings - and wouldn't you know it, the
actual baddie isn't Stefan of course but his evil brother Damon (Ian
Somerhalder), who has promised Stefan to make his life miserable ... and
who knows, as his next victim he might choose Elena ... If you
want to sum up this TV-pilot in two words, it would probably be vampire
kitsch. Basically, the whole thing is a soap opera about a bunch of
highschool kids with a bunch of vampires tagged on as an extra attraction,
but not so much to make the story scary but to fuel its romantic
undercurrents. And of course, to reach out to the target audience of the Twilight-movies,
the whole thing is accompanied by emo-friendly pseudo-alternative rock
music and the look of the whole thing tries hard to be not gothic but
trendy, especially when it comes to the vampires' looks and outfits. Well,
at least Nina Dobrev is cute in the lead and can actually act - Paul
Wesley as the lead vampire less so though ...
