What
could be more innocent, more peaceful than a dance between old friends –
friends like Mai (Danielle Harper) and Michael (Kent James Darden), who
have chosen the dance floor to catch up. But this is not your typical
dance, as sniper guns are trained on them, and Mai and Michael are hardly
your typical “old friends”. In fact until not long ago, they were the
top assassin couple, and their operations pretty much resembled dances, as
they always followed a certain rhythm and flow when they entered their
target’s homes, took out guards, cut short the escapes of fugitives, and
finally moved in for the kill, never missing a beat, and doing it all in
perfect synchronicity – that is, until their last hit turned out to be a
little kid (Rachel Salvatierra), and Michael suddenly grew a conscience
…
Ever
since John Woo has left his mark on the action genre in the 1980s, mixing
elaborate gunfights with breathtaking aesthetics, giving the most violent
scenes in the movie the feel of a dance, the term bullet ballets was
coined for films that followed this lead, films that put more emphasis on
appealing visuals than stark realism – without losing impact that is.
So
in that tradition, it makes perfect sense for Waltz
to frame its narrative in a dance sequence. That
said though, while certainly reminiscent, Waltz
doesn’t feel like a copycat of any number of genre movies as it has a
compelling story to tell, and one with heart – that just requires a
pretty awesome action set piece at its center, as a beautiful addition and
counterpoint to the framing dance routine (which by the way is not a
waltz).
