Emma (Erin Cahill) and Noah (Edi Gathegi) have just moved into a new,
beautiful housen in the suburbs ... when they start receiving odd notes,
telling them to move out and signed by "the Raven". Eventually,
they also receive weird packages that contain all sorts of useless things
- but sometimes they contain animal cadavers and warnings to move out at
once. Plus, time and again, it seems they're not alone in the house, and
especially Emma starts to see things. Through all this, their neighbour
Jeanne (Denise Crosby), single parent of autistic Mikey (Riley Baron),
stands by them, and gradually lets them in on the last owners of their
house, the Sakimotos (Sab Shimono, Takayo Fischer) - it seems Mrs Sakimoto
has killed herself in the house while the husband has disappeared without
a trace. Things really come to a head when Sakimoto turns up again - but
while everyone has figured him to be the villain, he might shed some
different light on the story ... Deliberately slow-paced, The
Watcher is pretty great in setting up tension, relying mostly on
atmosphere and perfectly placed shocks, before some rather unexpected
twists in the end that might not make 100% sense upon closer inspection,
but are very effective (and very coherent with the unfolding story) while
watching. And add to that a very solid cast, and you've got yourself a
very cool movie.
