Jindrich (Jirí Sovák) is a scientist as sober, dry and in fact dull
as they can be, who's presently working on the development of
anti-gravitational gloves - as in gloves that will give you the power to
lift everything (literally) without the slightest of efforts. Recently
though he has discovered a comicbook, Who Wants to Kill Jessie?, a
sci-fi adventure about sexy Jessie being constantly on the run from two
baddies, a superman and a cowboy, who want to steal the secret formula for
anti-gravitational gloves from her - and somehow that comicbook speaks to
Jindrich. Jindrich's wife Ruzenka (Dana Medrická) is also a scientist,
tasked with entering and manipulating people's dreams, and her test
subject just happens to be Jindrich. But a side effect of Ruzenka's
experiments is that the dream of the respective dreamer becomes reality -
and in Jindrich's case it's Jessie (Olga Schoberová), the superman (Juraj
Visny) and the cowboy (Karel Effa). Now Jindrich soon finds he likes
Jessie a lot, which Ruzenka isn't fond of at all, and while Jessie's still
on the run from the superman and the cowboy, with Jindrich only being of
modest assistance, Ruzenka cooks up a plan to throw Jindrich and his dream
creatures into jail, with the express intention to destroy the dream
creatures, just out of spite. Thing is, while Jessie and her pursuers
prove to be pretty much indestructible, Jindrich really grows with the
situation he's thrown in, manages to break out of prison, finish
development of the anti-gravitational gloves and pry Jessie from Ruzenka's
clutches. But Ruzenka's not one to give up easily ... If you're
into vintage comicbooks, pulps or movie serials, chances are high you will
love Who Wants to Kill Jessie?, which is a parody and loving
hommage of the above, really gets the essence of them while painting them
in a distinctly Czech light, which means the film brings some absurdist
humour to the mix and adds well-coated satire to the proceedings - and the
result is just wonderful, a wonderfully directed and hilariously acted
action comedy that seemingly effortlessly finds the right balance between
subtlety and spectacle, slapstick and sophisticated comedy and mixes it
into an extremely entertaining whole that
