Japan, around 1918, with not only the country but the whole region
being in turmoil: Young geisha Sodeko (Junko Miyashita) is well-versed in
the rules of her trade, the first of which is "never fall in love
with your first client", yet she does just that, repeatedly making
love with him during their night together. Another geisha has to bid
farewell to her favourite client, a soldier, and there are two geishas
fighting over a man, who has impregnated one of them. This film
is not so much a story movie but a excursion into the secret world of
geishas, and thus it tells its story or rather stories in a non-linear
way: While the whole story of Sodeko spans no more than one night of
lovemaking, other plotlines the lovemaking is intercut with take days,
weeks, even months to unfold. The film is interrupted repeatedly by
footage from actual historical events, as if to place the stories in
actual points in history, but then these events are presented out of order
as well and actually only serve to set up the film's mood. This all
interestingly enough does not result in major confusion but a very
entertaining film, carried also by director Tatsumi Kumashiro's stylish
and at times highly erotic direction, very clever editing, and a certain
dash of irony that saves the whole thing from becoming pretentious. Recommended.
