A basement. A man (Emanuele Delia) tied to a chair in the nude. Another
man (Simone Tolu) brutally torturing him, torture that also involves
cutting up his face and eventually even crushing his balls. A woman
(Chiara Pavoni) sitting in a chair opposite the victim, watching
nonchalantly, sometimes taking videos, sometimes evenb participating, but
sometimes looking bored out of her mind. Now the woman it turns out has
had terrible experiences with men all of her life, from her stepfather
(Francsco Giannotti) raping her to her husband (Giorgia Agri) cheating on
her with a man, so much so that she has eventually made the torturer of
the situation her willing executioner by feeding him all the drugs he
desires. But what makes his victim a deserving scapegoat for all the bad
things men have done to her? Maybe things do go deeper than they look at
first sight ...
Now Xpiation is certainly not a "pleasant"
movie going by the traditional definition of the word, as the film leaves
little to the audience's imagination, is actually rather blunt in
approach, and disturbing in terms of violence - so it's safe to say it's
not for everyone ... which I wager it was never intended to be as it's
pretty tailor-made for hardcore-horror audiences, constantly trying to
push the envelope in terms of violence, and never letting "good
taste" stand in the way of things. And yet, despite all the
(intended) unpleasantries on screen, this movie's more than just vapid
torture porn, as beneath the pure surface, and without much dialogue, it
tells an enigmatic story that only gradually reveals itself to the
audience and brings a certain depth to the proceedings, making this a
pretty fascinating watch for sure - though again, this is not a movie for
just everyone.
