The sun's almost setting when disgraced Crown Prince Chang (Ju Ji-Hoon)
and his bodyguard Mu-yeong (Kim Sang-ho) run across the poor citizens of
Dongnae who were abandoned by the ruling class in their zombie-infested
village last episode, and
since the undead rise at nightfall, time is of the essence - and Chang
decides to lead them to Seobi's (Bae Doona) clinic for the poor that's
properly fortified against a zombie attack. And our heroes make it there
only last minute - but after a night spent in safety, everybody's mood is
lifted the next day, and something resembling normalcy starts to set in
... when a battalion of the Emperor arrives outside the gates, having been
sent by Chancellor Cho (Ryu Seung-ryong) to arrest (and preferably
execute) the Crown Prince who has been charged with treason. And when
those inside won't send out the Crown Prince voluntarily, the clinic is
invaded, and it should be child's play to get Chang by force, what with
the battalion's bigger numbers and weaponry far superior to that of a
handful of villagers - but thanks to the cunning of Mu-yeong as well as
in-setting fog, the Crown Prince and the villagers manage to make good
their escape. Meanwhile in the capital, Cho, pressured by the cabinet to
prove the Emperor is still alive, presents them with the zombie Emperor,
which of course shocks everyone - but objectively speaking is enough
evidence that the Emperor is not dead - in a traditional way at least ... The
fourth episode of Kingdom really manages to keep up the
quality of earlier episodes, combining complex storytelling with nicely
executed setpieces (especially the soldiers' attack and later raid of the
clinic are worth a mention) and atmospheric filmmaking while keeping one
guessing storywise where the series might lead to.
