Jack (Dan Stripp), a radio DJ from Chicago, comes back to Pittsburgh
for his sister Caroline's (Ann Turiano) graduation, and while doing so, he
meets up with some old friends, like Leo (Will Guffey), a music
journalist, Dean (Shaun Cameron Hall), the DJ who succeeded him at the
local radio station WANT FM, and his ex Alison (Natalie Nicolian), who is
now dating WANT FM's boss Ray (Benjamin Bratt).
Soon, things start to happen, like Dean caught in bed with another
woman by his girlfriend Marjorie (Mia LaMonica), which is the best of news
for Leo, who has been secretly in love with her for a long time. Then Dean
tries to get friendly with Caroline's icey roommate Dierdre (Lacey
Fleming), which almost works until she figures out what an asshole he is
under his layers of charm. Then, at a party at Alison's, Ray fires all of
WANT FM's talk radio DJs, which almost leads to a split-up with Alison,
who suddenly realizes Jack wasnT' that bad after all ...
In the end, Marjorie tells off Dean and Leo both, because the former is
an asshole and the latter just pretends to be her friends to get in her
panties. And, before he leaves to Chicago, Jack gets on the mike on WANT
FM one more time to show everybody that talk radio can really mean
something ...
Above synopsis might sound rather feeble for a whole season of a
series, but keep in mind, the whole first season of the webseries Something
to be Desired consists of a mere five episodes and in all runs
roughly an hour long - and considering that the whole thing does a
remarkable job in introducing its whole ensemble and getting the story
moving at a swift pace ... especially if you also consider that most of
those involved were amateurs and the whole show is shot without any kind
of real budget - and it does definitely not look like your typical
amateur movie.
In fact, Something to be Desired is a charming and
entertaining mix of sitcom and soap opera depicting the lives of several
twentysomethings who somehow lack direction in their lives, including all
their big and petty problems - and as such, Something to be Desired
is definitely worth a look and way more interesting than most big budget,
professionally made films on the topic.
