When, after an alcohol- drenched party, Chrissy (Paula Wilcox) &
Jo (Sally Thomsett) find a complete stranger, Robin (Richard
O'Sullivan), in their bath-tub, they decide, after the shock wears off
& they find out he can cook, to keep him as their roommate, much to
the dismay of their somewhat old-fashioned landlord George Roper (Brian
Murphy), but met with interest by his somewhat horny wife (Yootha
Joyce). However, Roper's reservations are quickly eliminated once the
girls tell him Robin is gay (which he is not). In the early
70's, mixed-sex flat-sharing was still a big thing, so what better to
base a sitcom on. Over the next years, Robin, Chrissy & Jo would
undergo all the typical standard-sitcom-situations you would expect them
to, but what makes this series actually work is a good ensemble of
uniformly strong characters played by distinctive actors with a genuine
feel for comedy - a concept that the producers of the American remake of
this series, Three's Company, would completely fail to grasp,
giving all the lead roles to mediocre non-comedy people like John Ritter
& Susan Somers. Man about the House, by the way, proved so popular
in Britain that it spawned a Hammer-produced Man
about the House-motion picture
in '74 as well as 2 spin-off-series, George and Mildred & Robin's
Nest.
