As a yoga teacher, Ann (Heather Graham) is a success, especially after
she started vlogging what's basically rants about her personal life and
how yoga helps her overcome bad situations. And her personal life is
indeed a mess, she's terrorized by both her bible-thumping father (Michael
Gross) and her mother (Julie Halston), who wants Ann to help her with her
singing career despite lacking any musical talent. And then there's her
sister Clio (Julia Stiles), who despite constantly going in and out of
rehab can't kick her drug habit. On top of that, her love life's totally
out of control as she has the tendency to date psychos, addicts and the
like, relationships that never last more than a few months for obvious
reasons. Eventually, she decides to leave finding the right mate for her
in the hands of her best friends, nwely minted restaurant owner Max
(Thomas Lennon) and his wife Frances (Odessa Rae) as well as highly
judgmental Roz (Andrea Savage), and before you know it,t hey come up with
Steve (John Brotherton), a good-looking guy with a great body who's as
skillful a handiman as he's a cook, who's strong but mild-mannered, kind
and never pushy. He's pretty much perfect, so it doesn't take long for Ann
to fall for him, and fortunately he falls for her as well, and before you
know it the two are a couple. There's just one problem, Steve, a
divorcée, has a 7 year old daughter, Lilly (Ella Grace Helton) with his
ex, and the girl, still somewhat traumatized by her parents' spearation,
is very protective of her father, and suddenly Ann finds herself in a
fight over Steve's affections with the little girl, a fight she's not sure
she can or even wants to win ...
Now I'll say this, narratively this movie meanders a bit, at
times lacks a clear direction - but at the same time the film and
espeically its lead Ann also incredibly relatable, the situations she
finds herself in feel real, and hardly ever exaggerated for laughs. And
while as a whole, this is not a laugh-out-loud funny film, there's still
plenty of good-hearted humour, and quite a few punchlines are pretty much
priceless. And of course the cast's pretty much first rate, only helping
to make this a very worthwhile romantic comedy.
