Chicago, the 1970s: Valentine (Ciro Dapagio) is one of legendary gangster
boss Meyer Lansky's (Barry Jay Minoff) favourite enforcers - until he
bumps off the wrong man. So he's sent off to Miami together with Kofax
(Antoni Corone), a bookie fallen out of favour with the boss for his
betting habits, to build up the organisation's Florida branch. Far off the
beaten track and away from the direct scrutiny of the Chicago mob, they
come up with a good scheme to sell off high risk life insurances - that
will make them lots of money should their clients die ...
Miami, roughly ten years later: Velentine and Kofax have done well with
their life insurance scheme, and with Meyer Lansky long dead and the mob
still pretty much out of reach, they have worked for their own pockets
mostly. But then three things happen that ring their alarm bells: For one,
Valentine insures an undercover cop, Nick (Ronnie Marmo), who freely
admits to his trade and doesn't suspect Valetnine of any wrongdoings
(yet), but who knows where and when he might turn up again, then money
collector Handsome Pete (Peter Paul DeLeo) from Chicago has announced a
visit to take a look at our heroes' books and take home the company
overhead, money Valentine and Kofax have long claimed themselves. Ang
finally, Frankie Cutts (James Russo), an old acquaintance from Chicago who
has spent the last ten years of his life in the slammer, is stopping by to
kickstart a deal between Valentine and Kofax and a local mob that has its
own internal power struggles. And suddenly what has worked so well for so
long is put into question ...
A very nice gangster epic that, without being in the least a
copycat movie, is somewhat reminiscent of Martin Scorsese's best genre
movies, basically because it also comes across as light-footed, features
protagonists with poor moral compasses, and digs deep into its characters
without forgetting the action the genre demands.. And add to this very
decent performances from actors who really look their parts, and you've
got yourself really cool gangsterland entertainment.
