It starts out like a normal night for locksmith Mady (Jonathan Feltre),
with him opening the doors of strangers with great professionalism. But
then he meets Claire (Natacha Krief), who requires his services, and even
though she can't prove to him she lives in the flat he's to open the door
to, he finds her charming enough to believe her claim. And even when she
claims she has to step out for a minute to get cash to pay him, he doesn't
get suspicious. Thing is, she doesn't come back, instead Mady sees himself
confronted by the actual flatowner, Sam (Marco Maas), who isn't a guy who
asks many questions, instead he attacks Mady, so fiercely that Mady has to
kill him in self defense - and this is where stuff gets wild, as before he
knows it, Mady is kidnapped, tied up and questioned by gangster boss
Yannick (Romain Duris), as Sam was safekeeping a tidy amount of money for
him, and Yannick understandably wants it back. Now Mady doesn't know
anything about the money, but Yannick isn't one to believe that
without torturing Mady first, and only when Mady doesn't change his story
under duress, he sends Mady out with his men Theo (Jonas Bloquet) and Remy
(Thomas Martin) to go and find Claire - which sounds like a needle in a
haystack mission - until Mady overhears a phonecall between Theo and his
sister - and this sister proves to be Claire, and the two of them were
obviously in league to steal Yannick's money and then skip town. Thing is,
this knowledge doesn't do Mady much good as now Theo wants to kill him so
Mady can't spill the beans. Now Mady has a few tricks up his sleeve to
evade Theo for the time being, but he's not a fighter, and he's unarmed,
so the chips seem to be firmly stacked against him ...
A very entertaining piece of action cinema with so many
chases, fights and the like one has the feeling the film never sits still.
But what really makes the movie is that it also has a lot of heart, thanks
also to his underdog lead, and puts an emphasis on character development
and character arcs, which though never stand in the way of the action. And
a solid cast and suitably dynamic direction really help to make this a
very cool cinematic ride. And if this has gotten you
interested, Night Call will be released in the UK digitally on
April 28th 2025 by Vertigo Releasing.
